Alnico magnets

Permanent AlNiCo Magnets

When it comes to magnetic materials, alnico magnets are some of the most versatile and reliable options on the market. With their high-temperature capabilities and excellent magnetic properties, they are the go-to choice for many industrial and commercial applications.

But what exactly are alnico magnets, and what makes them such a popular choice?

What are Alnico Magnets?

Alnico magnets are a type of alloy that contains aluminum, nickel, cobalt, iron, and sometimes copper. The name “alnico” is derived from these elements (Al-Ni-Co).

The exact composition of alnico magnets can vary depending on the specific application requirements, but they typically contain around 5-26% aluminum, 8-40% nickel, 9-39% cobalt, 3-5% copper, and the rest iron. This combination of metals results in a material that has excellent magnetic properties, with a high coercive force and high remanence.

What Makes Alnico Magnets Unique?

One of the main benefits of alnico magnets is their high-temperature capabilities. They can operate at temperatures up to 500 degrees Celsius, making them an ideal choice for high-temperature applications in industrial and commercial settings.

Alnico magnets also have excellent magnetic properties, with high magnetic flux density and a high coercive force. This means that they can generate a strong magnetic field and maintain it even in the presence of external fields.

In addition to their high-temperature capabilities and excellent magnetic properties, alnico magnets are also corrosion-resistant, making them suitable for use in harsh environments.

AlNiCo Permanent Magnets Making Process

Alnico magnets are manufactured either by casting or sintering. Alnico is produced by conventional foundry methods using resin bonded sand molds or powder metal manufacturing methods. Sintering Alnico is suitable for complex geometries.

Most Alnico produced is anisotropic meaning that the magnetic axle of the grains is oriented in one direction. The orientation is achieved by a heat treatment process after casting or sintering.

The process involves heating the casting or sintered part above its Curie Temperature and then cooling it at a controlled rate in the presence of a directionalized magnetic field. Final shaping of the Alnico materials is achieved by abrasive grinding and cutting where close tolerances are required.
